Case of the Month #1 – Answer

This is a case of congestive heart failure corroborated by an echocardiogram demonstrating moderately reduced LV function and pleural ultrasound showing diffuse B line pattern (consistent with pulmonary edema).

Other causes of B lines (or the alveolar-interstitial syndrome) include:
– ARDS/ALI
– Pneumonia
– Lymphangitic Carcinomatosis

Also, while this case only shows decreased LV function in one axis (the parasternal long) we routinely corroborate any important finding with additional views. Traditionally for LV function this will be the parasternal short axis.
