This year marked the 10th anniverary for the annual Canadian Resuscitative Ultrasound (CRUS) Course at Western University. Hosted at the sophisticated CSTAR (Canadian Surgical Technologies & Advanced Robotics) facility, the CRUS course drew trainees from across Canada to teach concepts in point-of-care ultrasound for use in the acutely ill patients typically seen in the ICU, the ED or OR. Participants engaged in didactic and hands-on sessions, with emphasis on image acquisition, image interpretation and clinical integration. There was a particular emphasis on cardiac and respiratory failure, as well as vascular access.
Participants enjoyed a 2:1 learner to faculty teaching ratio for hands-on scanning sessions and large group clinical case studies to put their new found skills into contex. We also ran high-fidelity simulation cases with state-of-the-art equipment that incorporated point-of-care ultrasound in real-time decision making in an undifferentiated, acutely ill patient. Please see below for some pictures from the course!
This year also marked our inaugural ‘Introduction to Extended Applications in POCUS’ for local Faculty and incoming resident trainees. Featuring bedside scanning and image interpretation sessions, participants stepped into the realm of POCUS applications for DVT, gallbladder, renal, extended cardiac and thoracic assessments. All will follow up this educational day with a one-month rotation in the ED honing their skills with clinically based scans in these applications.
A huge thank you to our dedicated @emergencylondon instructors, our amazing POCUS Faculty for all of their content development and delivery, the organizing and leadership prowess of Dr. Heather Hames, the support staff at CSTAR, vendor support from Sonosite and Phillips, and of course all of our volunteer models. The team effort made this an awesome educational event for all.
We are already looking forward to next year!

The 2 day course (with the option of a 3rd half-day) is being held on August 16th, 17th (and 18th) 2017 at the sophisticated CSTAR facility at University Hospital in London, Ontario. This is the biggest and most comprehensive course of its kind offered in Canada. It is ideal for any clinician involved in resuscitation, such as intensivists, emergency physicians, anesthesiologists or internists.
In the core 2-day course, we emphasize resuscitative ultrasound in the following domains:
-critical care echocardiography
-lung and pleural ultrasound
-abdominal free fluid
-ultrasound guided vascular access (central, peripheral and arterial lines)
-DVT
For those who wish to stay for the 3rd day, a half-day ultrasound enriched simulation experience run by our local sim experts.
NEW this year – we have a new “retention” package that is looking to help those physicians working without much ultrasound mentorship to retain their skills after the course through regular video conference sessions for the year following our course. Be sure to check out all the different registration options on our course website.
]]>A huge thank you to all those learners, faculty, vendors and staff (esp the CSTAR staff and Rebecca Rondinelli) for making this a memorable experience!
This scale of course can only happen once a year so mark your calendars for the 2017 course which will take place on August 17 and 18 2017. Keep tabs on this website for announcements or, if you would like to be emailed when course registration for 2017 opens, please email Tammy Mills at [email protected]

-lecture content made available online for self-study before course (available at least 8 weeks ahead of course)
-on day of course: very brief lectures with live demonstration reviewing contents from pre-course lectures
-Sono-social the first night of the course with dinner and live music!
Along with our talented local faculty, guest faculty this year include Drs:
Paul Mayo (Northwell University, NYC)
Bret Nelson (Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, NYC)
Seth Koenig (Northwell University NYC)

An additional highlight of the course this year was the live stream of an in vivo critical care echocardiogram from Montreal. Highlighting a new software program called Reacts, this session was able to bring our audience of 100 faculty and particpants to the bedside in an ICU to interpret real time, echo images. Simply outstanding.
Clips here recorded from Reacts (poor audio from our London end due to being in an auditorium)
