Perioperative Ultrasound Western 2016: Empowering Anesthesiologists’ with Diagnostic Ultrasound. https://westernsono.ca/perioperative-ultrasound-western/perioperative-ultrasound-western-2016-empowering-anesthesiologists-with-diagnostic-ultrasound/ Wed, 28 Dec 2016 18:51:40 +0000 https://westernsono.ca/?p=2375 The second annual Perioperative Ultrasound Western workshop was yet again, an unparalleled success. Engaging 23 participants, including anesthesiology residents, fellows, and practicing anesthesiologists from academic and community hospitals in South-Western Ontario, this year’s workshop took place over two full days (Dec 3 & 4, 2016) at CSTAR, University Hospital. The workshop was organized by the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine at Western University and included a panel of nine expert faculty instructors.

The focus of this year’s workshop was on empowering anesthesiologists to make informed patient care decisions with the use of bedside diagnostic ultrasound in the perioperative setting. Domains covered included lung, pleural, airway, gastric, abdominal free fluid, and focused cardiac ultrasound. Structured as a series of short lectures integrated with hands-on practice sessions and case discussions, the course set a new standard for perioperative focused ultrasound workshops.

Thanks to outstanding faculty, superb organization and generous equipment support, participant ratings for the course were overwhelmingly positive. “Excellent course”, “10/10”, “Please continue to offer this workshop” where among the many comments that signified this resounding success. As we approach the new year, stay tuned for more details on our next annual workshop!

2016 Canadian Resuscitative Ultrasound Course – A Resounding Success https://westernsono.ca/courses/2016-canadian-resuscitative-ultrasound-course-resounding-success/ Fri, 26 Aug 2016 19:59:27 +0000 https://westernsono.ca/?p=1954 With 72 learners, 25 faculty and 2.5 days of high intensity, resuscitative ultrasound training, the 2016 CRUS course outdid itself even this year.  In addition to the usual features of the course like a flipped classroom curriculum (eliminating lectures altogether), 5 hours a day of practical training and a 2:1 learner to trainer bedside ratio, this course offered a new general simulation station (ultrasound integrated, of course), star studded local, national and international faculty and a showcase of the newest and most innovative ultrasound techniques and equipment.  Also, this year, lunchtime Kahoot sessions and an optional third day was added to address the growing interest in learning advanced echocardiographic techniques to be applied at the point-of-care were exciting additions to our program.

A huge thank you to all those learners, faculty, vendors and staff (esp the CSTAR staff and Rebecca Rondinelli) for making this a memorable experience!

This scale of course can only happen once a year so mark your calendars for the 2017 course which will take place on August 17 and 18 2017.  Keep tabs on this website for announcements or, if you would like to be emailed when course registration for 2017 opens, please email Tammy Mills at [email protected]

POCUS Staff Sessions : Thoracic Module https://westernsono.ca/education/pocus-staff-sessions-thoracic-module/ Fri, 17 Jun 2016 07:30:13 +0000 https://westernsono.ca/?p=1799 We are excited to have our inaugural ED staff training module in Thoracic POCUS off to a great start! Over a dozen of our ED faculty have already participated in our mini hands on and image interpretation sessions, with more sessions to come. Armed with their new skills in lung sonography, our ED faculty trainees are now off scanning thoraces with online feedback and guidance from our dedicated POCUS team.

Thanks to all that have participated, and special thanks to Cristiana Olaru, Behzad Hassani and Drew Thompson for this CME development.

Stay tuned for our next applications in the modular series.

ED – POCUS Introductory Course – 2014 https://westernsono.ca/education/ed-pocus-introductory-course-2014/ Sat, 12 Jul 2014 12:44:36 +0000 https://westernsono.ca/?p=1142 July 10th marked the third iteration of the ever-popular POCUS Introductory Course, hosted by the Division of Emergency Medicine.

Featuring multi-disciplinary attendees from Emergency Medicine (CCFP, FRCP and Peds), General Surgery, Vascular Surgery and Family Medicine, the scan-packed day was a great success. This year brought some new pre-course material and a revised format geared towards maximizing hands-on-probe time. Helmed by Dr. Behzad Hassani and Dr. Mirza Baig, our new Course Directors led a fun filled, education packed day for 28 new POCUS users with an industry-leading 2:1 student:instructor ratio.

A huge thank you to the organizing team, our Faculty Instructors and of course our models (who each endured dozens upon dozens of scans). Without all of this help the course would not be the annual success it has become.

Stay tuned for updates for our upcoming courses.
